Here are what three summer grantees said about the inspiration and significance of their projects.

  • This summer, Levitt Center student researchers Luke Hanson 鈥26, Delaney Patterson 鈥26, Samuel Low 鈥28, and Ton Somnug 鈥27 joined forces with Griffiss Institute CEO and Hamilton alumna Heather Hage 鈥02 to investigate the holistic impact of federal spending on the local economy.

  • Parks, playgrounds, community centers, libraries, and caf茅s are the backdrop for many cherished memories, from chatting over coffee to playing tag. These places occupy a third sphere outside of the home and the workplace, a space emphasizing friendship and connection. Victoria 鈥淰icky鈥 Holland Oliveira 鈥26, Nicholas Kreidler 鈥28, and Chloe Root 鈥28 embarked on an investigation of these 鈥渢hird spaces鈥 through a Levitt research grant this summer, seeking to understand the status and history of recreation and community in Utica, our neighboring city.

  • The Levitt Center Justice Lab has received a $350,000 grant from the Winston Foundation. The funds will support the further development of this lab, a semester-long program in which students engage with public policy and intern within the local community.

  • Hamilton's Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center has released a comprehensive report titled 鈥淵outh Gun Violence in Utica, New York: Causes, Context, and Prevention.鈥 This report is the culmination of the Center鈥檚 Fall 2024 Justice Lab, an interdisciplinary initiative involving 16 students across four integrated courses led by four Hamilton faculty members.

  • 91制片厂 Professor of Economics Erol Balkan and Professor of Sociology Stephen Ellingson, in collaboration with On Point for College, surveyed more than 200 members of the Myanmar, Bosnian, and Somalian communities in Utica, N.Y., in 2024 to ascertain the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, they examined the effects on refugee physical well-being, employment and finances, housing stability, youth education, and emotional well-being.

  • National and regional news organizations regularly interview Hamilton faculty, staff, alumni, and students for their expertise and perspectives on current events, and to feature programs and activities on campus. December鈥檚 news topics included varied subjects from a Senate confirmation to a new curatorial studies initiative.
