The Physics Department is taking learning out of the lab and into the field. Physics 100/200 and Physics 190 classes have been experimenting with launching pressure rockets behind the campus athletic fields. Faculty members Kristen Burson, Viva Horowitz, and Seth Major, and Director of Laboratories/Head Technician Adam Lark are making the most of this outdoor lab to teach the concepts of pressure and distance.

Suzanne Keen, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2020-21 academic year, including seven tenure-track appointments.

Sanjog Karki 鈥�20 began the summer as an actuarial intern working remotely at The Hartford. When August rolled around, he was offered a permanent position as an actuary. Here Karki describes his interest in mathematics and how that led him to his budding career.

A senior project on lead toxicity morphed into a summer research opportunity for Aliane Douyon 鈥�20 before she heads off this fall to the University of Miami to pursue a master鈥檚 in public health.

Shaq Levy 鈥�20 likens his new job as a medical scribe at CityMD, an urgent care walk-in center in Manhattan, to speed dating. 鈥淓ach patient comes in, you build a rapport with them, get their medical history, the reason they are coming in today, and ask more questions about their complaint,鈥� Levy said.

Avery Lum 鈥�22 had big plans this summer to take on a full-time fellowship with otolaryngologist Daniel Roberts 鈥�97 at UConn. Then the coronavirus pandemic hit. Instead of taking the summer off, Lum devised a fall-back plan.

Cameron Digiovanni 鈥�20 has two internships this summer 鈥� one that will prepare him for his anticipated enrollment in law school, and one that is helping him provide immediate, tangible benefits to Americans affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Lingli Zou 鈥�22 is getting a jump start toward her goal of attending dental school. She鈥檚 been selected to participate in the University of Connecticut Health鈥檚 remote six-week medical/dental preparatory program on a track specifically designed for pre-dental students.

Having spent a semester studying in Perugia, Italy, Gloribel 鈥淕lori鈥� Difo 鈥�20 became so captivated with the city that she decided to take what she saw and learned to create an interdisciplinary senior project: A Walking Tour of Perugia, Italy: Exploring the Building Stones Used in the City鈥檚 Construction.
