Recent graduate Deanna Durben 鈥25 engaged in research across the domains of sociology and psychology during her time at Hamilton. As the recipient of the B.F. Skinner Prize, the Jonathan Marder Prize, and the David J. Gray Prize in Sociology, it鈥檚 no surprise that she excelled in her research pursuits. In 2024, her efforts culminated with a publication in Sage journals titled 鈥淯nderstanding autistic camouflaging: The use of online community discussions and stigmatized identity research.鈥

Delbert Gonzales 鈥25, a theater major at Hamilton and winner of the College鈥檚 James Soper Merrill Prize this year, is committed to pursuing a career in the theatre industry. However, this path did not always seem a viable option to him. Growing up in Louisiana, Gonzales described how his school didn鈥檛 provide much support or many opportunities in theatre. His overall inexperience left him not knowing if he would ever 鈥渂e good enough鈥 to truly pursue the art.

To Charlie Ratner 鈥23, lacrosse has always provided the perfect blend of striving for success both as an individual and working together as a cohesive team. These qualities have been the building blocks of Ratner鈥檚 life; in fact, he describes his lacrosse stick as an inherent part of his very being.

Assistant Professor of Theatre Tobin Ost, who specializes in scenic design, does not believe in 鈥渁rt with a capital A,鈥 especially when it applies to design. Throughout his career, Ost has broadened his experiences and knowledge of the world around him while encouraging students to do the same. And some of his students are people who never intended to set foot into the world of theatre.

Student writer and Untitled@Large theatre club member Alyssa Samuels 鈥25 shares her experiences producing the Suddenly the Musical, which debuted at Hamilton this spring. The Events Barn stage lights glowed brightly on April 27, illuminating the shapes of actors moving to the music and smiles from the audience surrounding them. Suddenly the Musical, an Australian show, was performed for the first time without its original cast at Hamilton. Produced by the student group Untitled@Large, the show was special not only for premiere status, but also because every step of its process signified a chance for student growth and accomplishment.

The Levitt (Center)聽Law & Justice Lab, a program designed for students interested in synthesizing perspectives on public policy issues, just concluded a semester focused on exploring policies affecting homelessness in Utica, N.Y. The experience was led by Professors Frank Anechiarico (government), Herman Lehman (biology), Philip Bean (history), and Gwendolyn Dordick (government).

For many years, I鈥檝e prided myself on being a musician 鈥 someone who knew the notes, rhythms, and techniques of music well enough to find a deeper love for the art form. I knew music, I told myself; I could easily pick up on any of it! Yet, it only took two hour-long lessons in the chaotically beautiful symphony of Javanese Gamelan music to completely flip my worldview on its head.
