Introduction to Design
If you have reached this page, you likely already know that every member of the Hamilton community has been invited to take part in an institutional planning initiative through a process called aspirational design. Hamilton’s Aspirational Design website provides plenty of great information on the process and how you can get involved.
But how does one actually begin to “think like a designer”?
For anyone who wants to experience the design thinking process before jumping into their first charrette, the R&ID team is here to help. We welcome the opportunity to introduce you and your colleagues to design abilities, methods, and mindsets using Stanford's d.school Starter Kit.

Self-Paced Exploration
Find a partner and start your own private workshop. The Starter Kit's interactive exercises are created for pairs, but you can still learn a lot about the design process even if you go solo. All it takes is a pen and some paper.
Facilitated Exploration
Join the Research & Instructional Design team for a facilitated exploration of the d.school Starter Kit. We will be hosting workshops in the Couper Classroom:
- Monday, October 6, 9:00 to noon
- Tuesday, October 7, 1:00 to 4:00
Can't attend either of those days? Contact us at askus@hamilton.edu to explore other mutually agreed-upon dates and times for groups of 4-10 people willing to commit 3 hours to experience the Starter Kit with us.
