Course Description:

A survey of Middle Eastern and North African history from the 19th century to the present. Drawing on new research in environmental history, we will rethink conventional narratives of the region鈥檚 past. Features environmental histories of capitalism, defensive modernization, colonialism, resource extraction, the contemporary state system, identities and ideologies, the climate crisis, and movements for social justice. Students explore a variety of approaches for centering people, places, and actors often marginalized in dominant histories, focusing on how this work contributes to contemporary political and environmental debates.
