Course Description:

This course provides students understanding of the archaeological history of Ancient India from the emergence of the Indus Valley Civilization until the end of the twelfth century (4000 BCE-1200 CE). Themes include multiple urbanizations, states and empires, vassals and lordships, caste system, mercantile communities and trade networks, and diverse religious cultures. It will adopt a multi-disciplinary nature by studying archaeological, epigraphic, and art-historical sources. Prior knowledge of Asia not required.
