Who's Afraid of Democracy?

Course Number: GOVT 275
Title: Who's Afraid of Democracy?
Day & Time 1: TR 01:00PM 02:15PM
Instructor I: Gorham A
Credit: 1.00
Course Description:

Despite seemingly universal approval today, a deep skepticism of democracy and 鈥渢he demos鈥 runs throughout the canon of Western thought. This course traces the distrust of democracy through canonical texts, including Plato鈥檚 Republic, The Federalist, and Tocqueville鈥檚 Democracy in America. While these thinkers stress democracy鈥檚 excess, others will highlight its insufficiency, as in Mary Wollstonecraft鈥檚 A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and Malcolm X Speaks. Central to the course will be the effort to define what it is we mean when we talk about 鈥渄emocracy鈥 and, in the process, to better understand why so many people throughout history have been afraid of it.
