Course Description: | The Corporation examines how corporations have evolved as economic, political, and cultural institutions, shaping and reflecting the societies in which they operate. Drawing on historical analysis and ethnographic perspectives, the course traces their development from early chartered companies to the 2008 financial crisis, exploring key transformations in corporate structure, legal personhood, and financialization. We will consider how corporations have been shaped by historical forces such as colonialism, industrialization, and neoliberalism, while also analyzing their cultural logics, organizational practices, and symbolic power. Readings will examine how corporations have reshaped labor, culture, and economic inequality, as well as the ways they have been challenged and reformed. By examining corporate influence across time and space, students will gain a deeper understanding of its role in the modern world. |
