Testing Policy
Hamilton does not require the SAT or ACT
Should you submit test scores? It’s your choice.
All candidates are given full consideration, regardless of whether they include scores as part of their application.
For Hamilton’s class of 2029 (new students for the 2025-26 academic year), the middle 50% of those submitting test scores:
- SAT: 1440 — 1510
- ACT: 33 — 34
Roughly half of our enrolled students chose to submit test scores as part of their application for admission.
Consider submitting standardized test scores if you believe they strengthen your application.
Generally, applicants with at least 1400 on the SAT or 32 on the ACT are encouraged to submit their test scores as part of their application for admission.
But, keep in mind, context is important. According to College Board, the average SAT of all test takers nationwide is around 1050. Test takers who score 1350 or higher on the SAT – or at least 28 on the ACT – are among the top 10% of all test takers nationwide.
As part of our holistic review of your application, many factors are taken into consideration and no single criterion will determine an admission outcome. In the absence of test scores, the admission committee will place greater emphasis on other parts of your application, like your grades, academic rigor, out of class involvement, quality of writing and more. This is your chance to indicate what's important to you and what best identifies you beyond standardized test scores.
